The early 1970's were magical times for commercial aviation. Commercial jet aviation, just barely over ten years old, had firmly taken over from the prop planes that preceded them, and passenger loads were on the uprise. The original work-horses of jet aviation, the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8, were beginning to reach thier peak and fade. The promised bigger and better Boeing 747s, McDonald Douglas DC-10s and Lockheed L-1011 Tristars were beginning to make their way onto center stage, and commercial jet aviation would change forever. Most of the photos on these pages were taken on the runways at JFK International, New York, with a few taken at LaGuadia and Newark. Most of these planes have long since made their way through the scrapyards, perhaps the can of soda you are drinking today contains aluminum from one of these planes.
